When you ask someone to describe Hong Kong with a single word, most of them will answer: ‘buildings’, ‘shopping’, ‘city’, ‘noisy’, ‘crowds’, etc. They almost never answer with ‘nature’, ‘hiking’ or ‘beaches.’

Yes, HK is a big city like every big city in the world such as Paris, NY or London, but you have many ways to escape from the crowds, the traffic and the noise to find nature. There are many places where you can relax, chill and enjoy.

If you plan to stay more than 3 days in HK, you will have time to plan a mountain biking activity. My husband did it twice and every time, he gives the same feedback: “I am exhausted, but it was amazing. It is another Hong Kong.” He is planning more and more outdoor activities. Planning mountain biking activities in HK is easy and simple. You just need 1 spare day for it, as it includes travelling, biking and resting time.

Here’s one to try: from Tai Mo Shan to Tai Lam Chung Reservoir. You will need to rent the bike at Fo Tan. Then, from Fo Tan, you will need to call Gogovan (super easy and efficient – an affordable van service with a driver) to pick-up you and your bike and drop you at the head trail at Tai Mo Shan. From there, it is a 4-hour biking adventure to the reservoir.

It is quite tough and uphill, so be ready with at least 3 litres of water and snacks so that you will have energy to complete the trail. When you reach the reservoir, you can go to Gold Coast to have food there.  Then, call a Gogovan to drop the bike back at the rental store and go home for a long, hot shower to relax your legs. Finally, have a beer as a reward.
